Affiliation
Professor Moon joined the faculty of Seoul School of Integrated Sciences and Technologies after retiring from the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University, where he also served as the Dean. Professor Moon has taught as fulltime or invited professor at University of Washington, University of the Pacific, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Helsinki School of Economics, Keio University, Hitotsubashi University, and Stanford University.
Areas of Interest
His area of expertise includes topics such as international competitiveness, global business strategy, foreign direct investment, cross-cultural management, Korean (and Asian) business and economy, and creating shared value. He has developed several academic theories based on theoretical and practical analysis of firms, including the imbalance theory for foreign direct investment, the generalized double diamond model for international competitiveness, and the ABCD model for growth strategy at national and corporate level.
Education
He earned B.A. in English from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. After completing the master’s program of the College of Business Administration at Seoul National University, he earned Ph.D. in Business Administration specializing in International Business from University of Washington.
Experience
He has conducted many consulting/research projects for multinational companies (e.g., Samsung Electronics Co.), international organizations (e.g., UNCTAD of the United Nations), and governments (e.g., Korea, Malaysia, Dubai, Azerbaijan, Guangdong Province of China, and India). On national competitiveness, he has delivered special presentations at the annual meetings organized by the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils (GFCC), headquartered in Washington D.C. For interviews and debates on international economy and business, he has been invited by international newspapers and media, including New York Times, NHK World TV, and Reuters.
Research and publications
He has published numerous journal articles and books on topics covering international business strategy, cross-cultural management, foreign direct investment, and economic development in East Asia with a focus on Korea. His recent books include The Strategy for Korea’s Economic Success (2016, Oxford University Press) and The Art of Strategy: Sun Tzu, Michael Porter, and Beyond (2018, Cambridge University Press). He has received the Academic Research Award by Seoul National University. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Business and Economy, an international academic journal.
